Will Simonson

Senior Programme Officer | Climate Change and Biodiversity

Will joined the Centre in August 2015. He is developing a portfolio of projects in the fields of climate change adaptation and impacts. He is interested in the synergies and trade-offs between climate change adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity conservation and food production, from agricultural and multi-functional landscapes upwards to national and regional-level policies and plans. He combines his role as Senior Programme Officer with a continued involvement at the University of Cambridge and its Strategic Research Initiative in Global Food Security.

Previous experience & expertise

Prior to joining the Centre Will spent six years at the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge. His doctoral and post-doctoral research in the Forest Ecology & Conservation Group focussed on the use of airborne lidar and optical remote sensing for the study of woodland structure and function in southern Iberia. He also led a collaborative project undertaking land cover change analysis, landscape modelling and habitat assessments to develop a decision support resource for biodiversity conservation in wood pasture landscapes of Portugal. This built on earlier experience of working for the conservation charity ‘A Rocha’ in that country, UK Biodiversity Action Planning, and conservation consultancy and support in countries such as Lebanon, Ghana and Kenya.

Recent work by Will Simonson

Building Capacity for Coastal Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Small Island Developing States |

Will is helping to prepare and publish technical guidance materials on coastal EBA options, including a decision support tool that can guide the process of incorporating coastal EBA principles into national planning and development processes. This knowledge is designed to be used to improve the adaptive capacity of island and other coastal communities to build resilience to climate change.
