Simon Blyth

Senior GIS Officer | Business and Biodiversity

Simon provides Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis and associated outputs both to business and other sectors for a wide variety of projects. He is involved in many of the environmental impact assessment projects at the Centre, involving the access and dissemination of information from a number of in-house and external datasets, using a variety of data types, scales and projections.

Previous experience & expertise

Before joining the Centre, Simon worked within local government in East Sussex for eight years. Then, following a full-time degree course he worked for eight years during the 1980’s at Petroconsultants (CES) Ltd. in Cambridge, on geographical and geological databases using very early and primitive in-house GIS systems. He joined WCMC in 1990 and has since then worked extensively on many of the Centre's various GIS data holdings and projects. Key areas of work include updating and quality control of many of the Centre’s GIS databases, including Protected Areas, Wetlands, Mangroves and Coral Reefs.

Recent work by Simon Blyth

World Database on Protected Areas |

Simon has worked extensively on the protected areas database throughout his time at the Centre, and has recently developed a set of tools to enable the generation of comparable tables of statistics on every aspect of the attribute information for each monthly update of data.

UK National Ecosystem Assessment |

The two year long assessment was funded by Defra, the Devolved Administrations and several research councils (NERC and ESRC). Simon provided much of the mapped output and analysis in this study into UK’s natural environment in terms of the benefits it provides to society and continuing economic prosperity.

Global Biodiversity (Groombridge B & Jenkins M.D.) 2000 and World Atlas of Biodiversity (Groombridge B & Jenkins M.D.) |

These two publications, for which Simon produced many of the maps and statistics, focus on both marine and terrestrial biodiversity and provide a vital foundation for policy development and action on the ground.
