Sarah Darrah

Programme Officer | Ecosystem Assessment

Sarah joined the centre in the Ecosystem Assessment Programme in October 2014. Her role has a particular focus on providing support to the revision of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and the mainstreaming of biodiversity into the policies and plans of production sectors. Sarah’s work also focuses on engaging stakeholders in the use of future scenarios of land use change in agricultural development plans.

Previous experience & expertise

Sarah has a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Oxford and an MSc in Conservation Science from Imperial College London. Sarah’s research interests lie in the development of global indicators of plant biodiversity and conservation prioritisation schemes. Among other roles, she has worked with the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew on predictive modelling of extinction risk in plants and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) on sustainable intensification of agriculture. Sarah also has experience in coastal Kenya studying forest regeneration dynamics.

Wetland Extent Trends (WET) Index |

Sarah is leading a global update of the WET index which measures trends in wetland area over time, enabling the rate of loss (or growth) of wetlands to be estimated and giving an indication of the status of wetlands globally.

Commodities and Biodiversity, MacArthur Foundation |

Sarah is responsible for coordinating delivery of project reports, including reviews of status and trends of biodiversity and commodities, and technical reviews of existing approaches to mapping biodiversity, ecosystem services and agricultural suitability. Sarah also works on formulating scenario-guided policy recommendations for the Lake Victoria Basin region informed by models of land use change and stakeholder engagement.

Sarah’s role focuses on strengthening outreach and targeting appropriate resources to UNEP-supported countries through the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) revision and update process.
