Elise’s role is to lead on activities related to science and assessment within the Protected Areas Programme; manage external relationships and partnerships including: enhancing existing collaborations with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and coordinate the further development and coordination of new projects. Her role also involves playing a driving role in the analyses of protected areas indicators and scientific assessments, the analysis of different governance mechanisms, and monitoring climate change impacts on protected areas.
After several years of academic research, Elise decided to engage in the field of biodiversity conservation. She first worked for a local marine conservation organization focused on the creation of new community-managed marine protected areas in Madagascar. She was then in charge of the research and development projects of an international volunteer-based conservation organization based in London. Elise holds a Masters in population biology, genetics and behavioral ecology, obtained in France, and a PhD from the University of Sussex, UK.
Protected Planet Reports are biennial landmark publications that assess the state of protected areas around the world. They are based on the data contained in the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and other relevant resources. The 2018 edition focused on reviewing and updating progress made at the global level towards achieving Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. Elise was the lead editor of the Protected Planet Report 2018.
Elise has been leading on the World Heritage comparative analyses, which contribute to the IUCN evaluation of natural World Heritage nominations. She is also developing a portfolio of projects related to natural World Heritage properties in collaboration with IUCN.
Protected Areas Resilient to Climate Change (PARCC) was a five year project funded by the Global Environment Facility aimed at developing protected area networks more resilient to the effects of climate change in the West Africa region. The project developed methodologies to assess the vulnerability of protected areas to climate change and strategies to improve protected area management, and built capacity in the region to use these tools. Elise was the project manager for the full duration of the project.
