Cristina Lázaro

Associate Programme Officer | Conserving Land and Seascapes

Cristina’s main role is to support the administration and technical maintenance of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and Protected Planet. In particular, she is responsible for updating entries for a set of focal countries in the Latin American region. Besides this, Cristina is applying her GIS expertise to provide technical and analytical support to a wide range of projects related to the WDPA and Protected Planet.

Previous experience & expertise

Before joining UNEP-WCMC, Cristina worked for an environmental engineering company in Italy where she managed international projects financed by the European Commission, World Bank and African Development Bank and provided technical project support as a GIS technician. Prior to this, she worked at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama and the National Museum of Natural Sciences of Madrid, where she developed her conservation research and GIS skills.

Cristina holds a BSc in Environmental Sciences from Autonomus University of Madrid (Spain) and an MSc in Forest and Nature Conservation from Wageningen University (Netherlands). Her MSc thesis focused on habitat fragmentation and mammal community composition in Panama.

World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) |

Cristina manages data on protected areas in the Latin America region within the WDPA. She is in contact with national focal points in the region, supporting updates and data management for the countries, and ensuring the information in the WDPA is accurate and up to date.
